SS Great Eastern was an iron built sailing / steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. At the time of her launch, in 1858, she was the largest ship ever built with the capacity to carry 4000 passengers from England to Australia without refuelling. Brunel died shortly after her maiden voyage.
In 1849 the Great Eastern was the largest ship the world had ever seen. It was over 700 feet in length. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who designed the Great Eastern, was one of the greatest engineer visionary of the 19th century. He collaborated with John Scott Russell, whose company built her over 3 years in a London shipyard.
