Pietro Palmieri obtained the Maserati and almost raced it in the 1954 Mille Miglia on May 2nd but decided not to because of the heat and noise of the cockpit. The Maserati A6 GCS/53 Berlinetta Pininfarina, to use its full name, has been displayed at several car shows in and around the Cape and is almost always met with dropped jaws — ours included. Most don’t know what it is, and those few who do can hardly believe it’s a replica. Belonging to Maserati’s extended A6 family, the Maserati A6GCS/53 was a two-seater primarily developed to contest the World Sportscar Championship.

Je n’irais pas jusqu’à dire que tout y était permis, mais presque. Maserati A6 were a series of grand tourers, racing sports cars and single seaters made by Maserati of Italy between 1947 and 1956. They were named for Alfieri Maserati (one of the Maserati brothers, founders of Maserati) and for their straight-six engine. Maserati could not directly commission Pinin Farina to fit their chassis with bodies, as the Turin based company had just signed a deal with Enzo Ferrari. Rome-based Maserati dealer Giuglielmo ‘Mimmo’ Dei bought 6 bare A6 GCS/53 chassis. He then commissioned Pinin Farina to fit them with elegant berlinetta bodies. Four Maserati A6GCS/53 Berlinetta cars were finally completed to Dei's order, with coachwork styled and crafted by Pinin Farina of Grugliasco, Turin.

The engineering on which the Maserati A6GCS Berlinetta is based is that of a real racing car, since Maserati sent Pininfarina (in Grugliasco) the chassis complete with all mechanical parts, ready for the addition of the coachwork. This meant that the cars had racing specifications with coachwork created starting from a blank sheet of paper. The 1953 Maserati A6GCS/53 Berlinetta, styled by Pininfarina, was really an apple of every car lovers when brought to the public view. This was the car that not only grabbed the instant attention of the people around, but it also left all and sundry around it with its beautifully-designed body.
